Three checks before adding storage
- Sort what you already own. A container bought before you know what goes inside may be the wrong size.
- Look above floor level. Shelves can use height without filling the walking area.
- Measure the gap and the access. Check not only width and depth, but also doors, drawers and the space needed to pull items out.
In a rental, check your agreement and the mounting instructions before fixing anything to a wall. The Japanese rental-wall guide (Japanese) explains more options.
1. A modular cube shelf
A basic cube shelf can hold books or baskets for smaller items. Check its outside dimensions, assembly requirements and where you can place it without blocking a door or outlet.
2. A tension shelf between suitable walls
A tension shelf can use a gap above a toilet, entryway or laundry area. Its load limit depends on the installation width and the strength of the surfaces it presses against; do not assume every wall is suitable.
3. A narrow rolling kitchen cart
A cart may fit beside a refrigerator for wraps, seasonings or pantry items. Leave enough clearance to roll it out and to open the refrigerator door, and check whether the gap is level.
4. Drawer cases inside a closet
A drawer case can organise clothes below hanging items. Measure the closet depth and the clear opening with its doors fully open; a case can fit inside yet leave too little room to pull a drawer out.
5. A tension rod for lightweight items
A rod can hold a lightweight curtain or create a hanging point in a suitable recess. Match its adjustable range and load rating to the gap. Check the contact surfaces, especially in a rental, because pressure can leave marks.
Measure first, then buy the smallest useful solution
Start with the belongings you need to store and the exact space available. Height and narrow gaps can help, but keep access, wall strength and load ratings in mind. The buy-or-wait guide can help decide what is worth adding. Prices and availability change; verify them at the shop.
